George Wright in History of Fort Fairfield, Maine

1876 - Fort Fairfield, Aroostook, Maine, USA
History of Fort Fairfield - Chapter VII - Fort Fairfield from 1828 to 1831 by David O Parks - The original inhabitants were poor and labored under all the disadvantages incident to settling a new country, destitute of trade or commerce. The nearest store was at Woodstock, N.B. and all pine lumber was seized by the warden of the disputed territory, and their grain was sold to peddlers and hawkers at a very low price, to obtain a few articles they could not do without. Yet their numbers steadily increased. This year, 1828, Charles Buber settled on the Deering farm, near where the willow tree is now standing. His mother visited her friends in Marysville, N.B., and brought home a willow cane, planted it and it has grown to the stately willow you now see. Here the first death occurred in Fort Fairfield. Charles Buber's father, Mr John Buber died in Oct 1828, and was buried about six rods below the willow on the bank, between the road and the river. The writer of this split a pine log into boards, hewed and planed them for a coffin, for the first human being interred in Fort Fairfield. This year Charles Walton commenced farming on the little flat on the lower end of the Nelson farm. A Mr Gilleland on the lower side of the brook near Osbourn's hotel. Alexander McDougal next lot below Charles Buber, and George Wright on the John Trafton farm.
