George B Brown Obituary

March 7, 1894 - Caribou, Maine, USA
Death of An Old Soldier - George B Brown died Monday of erysipelas, aged 73 years. The deceased was born in Ireland and was a soldier in the British army. During the Aroostook War, when his regiment was near Grand Falls, N.B., he deserted and was tracked as far as Fort Fairfield. A reward was offered for his recapture, and although several efforts were afterwards made to get him across the line into New Brunswick, he proved too cunning to be caught napping, and has ever since been a resident of Aroostook. During the War of the Rebellion, he joined the Union army. He had a fearless character and his former experience in the army made his services valuable. His comrads unite in saying that he was one of the very best soldiers in his regiment. The wounds he received and the trials and hardships of those trying times ruined his health and at the time of his death he was receiving a pension of $30.00 per month. He leaves behind a widow and several children to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father, and who have the sympathy of all the people of this section in their sorrow.
